Josie's Story

Josie's Story: A Mother's Inspiring Crusade to Make Medical Care Safe

Eight years ago, I had returned to school hoping to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I completed a year, and stayed home with the children. This summer, I returned to school, hopefully to finish. It's not easy to be a full time student, wife, mother, have a house and chores, but it is going okay. Sometimes it's really hard, but I take things one day at a time and am getting through just find. In fact, it's made be become better organized and self disciplined.
In a nursing newsletter, Josie's Story, was recommended. Why? To enhance our leaning and critical thinking skills. This beautiful little girl was about to be released from the hospital when a nurse gave her a narcotic, that she was no longer supposed to have, and it stopped her heart. The mother told the nurse no, that the drug was not supposed to be given, but, the nurse gave it anyhow. The mother was uneasy several times in the hospital, her daughter was also severely dehydrated, but kept telling herself not to over react, they know what they are doing........
I have been here. We would have lost our oldest daughter if I hadn't finally switched to another hospital. Our son would be crippled if I didn't listen to my gut instinct and take him to another hospital. Even in the next hospital, her future was uncertain. Yes, I felt like a monster for questioning them and was treated like one. An estimated 98,000 people die each year from medical "mistakes"! And we are supposed to not ask questions and trust the medical communities every move. You would think they would want patients and families involved-to help prevent these accidents. This is an excellent book to read, it is heart breaking. It's bad enough to lose a child, or anyone, to an illness but it is UNACCEPTABLE to lose a child to a medical error and know their death was unnecessary. The money the family received from the hospital is NOTHING, it can't bring their little girl home. But at least they are fighting to prevent as many unnecessary deaths as possible.
They have started The Josie King Foundation http://www.josieking.org/page.cfm?pageID=1
If you don't read the book, go to the site and read her story and what they are doing.
